The third season of the very popular American television series ‘House of Cards’ begins next month. It has won numerous awards; in fact, just last week Kevin Spacey won the award for best actor in a dramatic role (portraying Frank Underwood) from the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) awards.
Few people know the idea for the series comes from a trilogy of books written by Englishman Michael Dobbs. It was also recreated for BBC televison in 1990 with Ian Richardson portraying Francis Urquhart (get it?).
So for the fans of the US series, watch the UK mini-series ‘House of Cards’ to see the deliciously sinister and conniving Francis as the Chief Whip/Prime Minister rather than Frank as the Congressman/President you know so well.
Better yet, read the trilogy ‘House of Cards, ‘To Play the King’ and ‘The Final Cut’ at your nearest secondhand bookshop. Hey wait, that would be us!! Enjoy the interview.
